Carla Juacaba’s design for a weekend home in mountainous eastern region of rio de janeiro uses the load bearing properties of meter-thick stone walls to suspend the roof and floor joists. four steel beams puncture walls so as to allow a sliver of glazing to wash the interior of the stone walls with diffused light. the visual weight of the rustic stone counters the lightness of the horizontal planes, creating an effect that mirrors the nearby river where diaphanous space confronts stalwart earth. the home explores the architectonics of encounter; water and fire, weight and lightness, archaic and industrial, and solid versus void

The Brain by Olson Kundig Architects.
The Brain is a 14,280 cubic-foot cinematic laboratory where the client, a filmmaker, can work out ideas. Physically, that neighborhood birthplace of invention, the garage, provides the conceptual model. The form is essentially a cast-in-place concrete box, intended to be a strong yet neutral background that provides complete flexibility to adapt the space at will. Inserted into the box along the north wall is a steel mezzanine. All interior structures are made using raw, hot-rolled steel sheets.

Three Courtyards Community Center, China
A rapidly developing area along the yangtze river called for a community center for recreation, dining and meeting spaces for the residents and employees of the burgeoning city of yangzhou. The structure used streamlined form and a rich architectonic palette to balance the likes of the 2500 year old beijing-hangzhou grand canal nearby and the sleek glass office blocks that so characterize early urbanity.
